The MBA programme comprises three stages, each of which carries a separate postgraduate award. Students usually study one stage per year, although different study options are available We are proud to say that we have a 100% achievement rate across our MBA programme.
Who is this course for?
Students joining the MBA (a validated University of Essex Masters Programme) in the main are in full-time work and come from a range of both the private and public sectors. Our flexible patterns of attendance help to ensure that time away from work are minimised. Organisations include the NHS, Chelmsford Borough Council, Carillion, BT, Terence Higgins Trust, Fläkt Woods, University of Essex, Ingleton Wood, Charles Derby UK Financial Advisors and BNP Paribas Bank. The course is for professionals who are keen to respond to the changing needs of their organisation and are dedicated to developing their personal skills and knowledge. Individuals will learn about contemporary business issues and how these can impact on their professional roles.
The course structure, study options and timetables are designed specifically to give part-time students the best possible combination of personal preferences, flexibility and support, recognising the ever-present demands of work and family commitments. The most common approach is to attend for an afternoon and evening on the same day for about 28 weeks a year. However, evening-only study, fast track and a blended approach are also available.
Please note that all modules are independent and the sequence is unimportant – students may commence their studies in either late September for Semester 1 or early February for Semester 2.
The MBA will provide successful graduates with substantial benefits in terms of career progression and promotion within their organisation, plus versatility in terms of mastering new professional knowledge and cross functional working. On achievement of the MBA, those wishing to remain in education can progress onto a PhD programme.
Postgraduate Certificate in Management (MBA Year 1)

The emphasis will be on the role that marketing management can play in implementing and controlling the marketing mix processes.
Semester 2 modules

The Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies is a widely recognised qualification that will further enhance promotion and career opportunities in management.
Successful completion of this MBA stage leads to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Management. The stage comprises four independent modules each worth 15 credits.
Semester 1 modules
Managers must plan for the future, but they regularly face the unexpected. The reality of management is that work organisations behave in a manner that is complex, changeable, political and difficult to control. This module will help learners to make sense of work organisations and help them manage salient aspects of organisational life.
Managing Information and Decision-Making
Managers need to make decisions at all levels within an organisation, from day-to-day operational decisions through to strategic decisions that influence the long-term success of the organisation. This module introduces decision theories and explores a range of techniques for collecting, analysing, interpreting and presenting information to provide a sound basis for decision-making.
Semester 2 modules
Students will develop an understanding of the life cycle of projects and gain an ability to manage the stages within it – from definition, planning and scheduling; through budgeting, monitoring and control; to auditing and closure. Students will examine case studies of project management; learn relevant concepts, models and theories; and apply the knowledge they have gained to the management of a real-life project.
This module examins how aspects of management (marketing, organisational behaviour, human resource management, finance, etc) relate to strategy. The module traces the development of strategic management through its key stages: developing a strategic vision and mission; carrying out competitive analyses; setting strategic objectives and selecting strategy options.
